Podcast #9 – Cutting Players – Ability or Character
What is Cut Policy?
This topic usually sparks much heated debate among parents and educators as to what the practice of cutting potential players from middle or high school teams should be. Proponents of cutting often argue that cutting is necessary to prepare children for an adult world where there are winners and losers.
On the flip side many believe a no-cut policy would simply guarantee students the right to participate and learn. Not cutting doesn’t stop starters being based on demonstrated ability. Not-cutting would ensure that the lesser skilled would have equal access to learning opportunities.
Another argument is financial, cutting is often necessary because of limited resources, lack of sufficient facilities, instructors and equipment often make it impossible to offer a quality experience to all students.
On the flip side of the argument it is stated that eliminating children is an ethical not a financial issue. It is concerned with how students should be treated as people and also addresses the stated purpose of co-curricular activities.
